Why Do You Want To Be An SDR?

Do you really want to be an SDR? Truly ask yourself that question before trying to break into software sales. Because if your sole reason for taking on an SDR role is to move into an Account Executive (AE) or Field Sales (FSR) position as fast as you can, you’re setting yourself up for failure later on in your career.Invest in your future.

There are two main reasons for that…

The first being that you haven’t taken the necessary time to understand what it takes to really build pipeline from an inbound or an outbound perspective or how to work symbiotically with marketing.

Worse still, by trying to get out of the SDR role as soon as possible, what you’re really saying is that you don’t respect the craft which means that when you become an AE or FSR you will unknowingly cause friction in the sales process.

The second reason is…

That you’ve already declared that you’re mainly driven by money — most sales leaders are probably sitting there thinking yeah, so? I wouldn’t want a salesperson that isn’t driven by money (this mentality is part of the reason why sales is broken and so many sales reps are missing their quotas but that’s a separate subject).

Money motivated salespeople only care about one thing, themselves (and their over-inflated egos) which pretty much means every interaction a potential buyer has with them is a negative one as they are only focused on what they can get out of the conversation.

Is that the type of salesperson you want to be and that your customers deserve?

If you’re genuinely serious about having a successful career in sales, don’t cheat yourself.

Invest in your future.

That means, taking the time to learn how to be the best possible SDR you can be, go through the good times and the bad, get into as many discovery calls as you can, learn how to handover leads, and how to work closely with the outside sales team.

That way, you’ll learn what you do and don’t like and who you are and what you’re about.

This is the mindset you need to be successful in software sales.
