Music Lights the Eyes of Children

A teacher’s soul ignites when she connects with her students.

The young girl entered the music store, violin in hand, excited to have her second lesson. She was prepared to play. The light of music shown in her eyes.

Did she complete the four practices?

“Yes!” She exclaimed while nodding her head.

With violin in hand, she got ready to take a bow. Beautifully executed, she stood with a huge smile on her face. I asked her to play open A and open E. She did so, with a much better sound than last week. Powerful!

She played Twinkle for me on the violin. She played it from memory, with only a few minor bow errors. The sound was truer, the confidence was stronger.

She practiced, and you could tell.

I gave her some more to do, incrementally, so she progresses even further. She played an A Major scale and some rhythms on the A and E string, all preparing her to play the same tune with Twinkle in the coming weeks.

Instructors all have a different approach in music lesson formats. I prefer slow and steady growth. Positive reinforcement, and a foundation of form. In form, I mean how one stands, holds the bow, the violin, and the executes proper finger placement.

I am excited to see her progress from only one week. One week! In no time, she will be playing through book one of Suzuki and in pride, her family can join her at a recital where she can learn to embrace performance.
