Even FWBs Should Be Honest With Each Other

If anything, this type of relationship requires even more transparency to sustain.

She cried while lying in my arms in bed. “I hate how well you treat me.” She finally admitted she’s been lying this whole time. The times when she didn’t pick up my calls and told me she was out with friends — she wasn’t. She was with her ex.

We’ve been FWB for a couple of months now. Aside from the physical aspect, we connect on a deeper emotional and intellectual level. The agreement was to allow both sides to do their own thing. Technically, she didn’t do anything wrong. It’s the dishonesty that turned me off. I guess many people would agree with her that within a casual relationship, there can’t and shouldn’t be complete honesty because the relationship is built on ambiguity, to begin with.

But I disagree. It’s because open relationships are so complicated that it requires even more trust than a regular relationship. I knew she has been seeing her ex. He helps her set up furniture in her new house. She mentioned him coming over sometimes, and even wanting to get back together. Next to the toothbrush that I use when I stay over her house is another toothbrush. Hmmm.

Whatever she does when she isn’t with me isn’t my business. However, by deliberately lying about her whereabouts, not picking my calls, and promising to call back but doesn’t, she’s making the relationship feel one-sided. As if we’re not equal FWB partners. Rather I’m the spare tire she uses whenever she needs.

Conversely, if she were to be more transparent, even if I prefer her not to mess around with other men, I can’t blame her for it, because she’s at least being honest. If I call her and she’s busy with another guy. Instead of making up stories about it to avoid a confrontation that shouldn’t exist because she’s still playing within the rules of the game, just say hey “I’m not available right now, talk later.”
