Staying Healthy During Pregnancy

What can be more wonderful in your life than waiting for the arrival of a new baby? There are lots of feelings associated with this phenomenon in which mother nature provides you with a chance to feel a new life stirring and growing inside your body. Even during the gestation period, you are required to take care of your unborn child along with your own health. There are lots of pieces of advice which you can get from your friends and relatives, which are based on basic common sense, but there are some scientifically proven tips which can allow you and your baby to stay healthy during the three trimesters of the pregnancy.

The Environmental Tobacco Smoke is popularly known as second-hand smoke can be quite injurious for a developing fetus. The unintentional intake of ETS can result in multiple complications during the gestation as well as during the time of delivery. So, it is always better that you do not smoke and avoid outings where chances of inhaling second-hand tobacco smoke are unavoidable. Apart from this controlling your alcohol intake is also a must.

Taking prenatal vitamins even before you conceive is a good idea. Taking such vitamins helps in covering any nutritional imbalance in your diet which can result in infertility and inability to conceive. The prenatal vitamins also play a very important role in the overall healthy development of the fetus. Taking important supplements containing folic acid, calcium and iron is not only healthy for you but also helps in developing the neural cord of the baby in the first trimester.

As in normal day to day life, exercising is also very important during pregnancy. The daily dose of exercise helps you by reducing stress, improving mood swings and to sleep better. It is recommended that during pregnancy you should join an exercise class or walk for fifteen to twenty minutes per day. This will help you to control the metabolism of the body and improve circulation of blood. There are many exercise regimens such as yoga, swimming, Pilates or Kegel exercises which are suitable for most of the pregnant women. The word of precaution is that you must consult your physician before indulging in any of such physical activities.

During the pregnancy, there are certain types of daily chores which should be changed or totally avoided. Working with any sort of hazardous chemicals; heavy lifting or cleaning cat litter is a big no-no. Even the day to day chores which require long hours of standing must be avoided. It is recommended that one should use disposable gloves even while working in the garden. Also, wash your hands every time when you handle any type of raw meat products.

A healthy diet is essential for a normal wellbeing of a person. During pregnancy, opting for a healthy and nutritious diet becomes even more important. It is recommended that caffeine should be limited or totally avoided during pregnancy. As an alternative for your cravings, you can opt for those fruits which are rich in natural sugars. For the overall development of an unborn child, eating fish is also very beneficial. The high Omega 3 oils available in fish help in increasing IQ of the child and improving cognitive skills. While opting for fish, try to avoid those which have high chances of mercury contamination such as swordfish, mackerel, and shark.
